Stockhausen's Passing

We note with respect and regret the passing of the great innovator, Karlheinz Stockhausen, whose major work for piano, percussion, and electronics, Kontakte, we will present on March 17, 2008 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Forum. For this performance, Bryan Wolf, Stockhausen's own sound engineer. will come from Germany to coordinate the sound projection, joining pianist Julie Steinberg and percussionist William Winant.

Stockhausen's music has played an important part in the repertoire of our ensemble since the 1970s, including such works as Tierkreis, Stimmung, and Zeitmasse. In 1996, Thomas Schultz and Joan Nagano performed his evening length piece for two pianos, percussion, and electronics, Mantra. Most recently, William Winant played the solo Vibra-Elufa from Licht, Stockhausen's giant cycle of seven operas.
