Liderman's death was on the minds of the players and the audience Monday night. This audience included an unusually large number of students (many were his, I'm sure). It was sobering, and a fitting tribute, when the players stood silent before beginning his piece. Of the music itself I can only say I found it beautiful, and the soloist fascinating.
(If the conductor had not been ill I would have hoped for a second playing. . . .perhaps, tho, that would have been unfair, so I will just remember the reaction I had and be glad I had been able to attend.) Esta Wolfram
I agree that it was a moving and beautiful evening. The Liderman piece was especially rich and beautiful. People around me were in tears by the end. And the work that Chris and Graeme were able to do with such short notice attests to the depth of talent and commitment within the players.
Here's a long-after-the-fact comment: the Feb 4th concert was both a moving experience and an incredible treat, especially the Liderman piece which I hope you'll record. You're welcome to read a little more of my reactions to it, and to Carla in general, on my own blogspot blog.
Thanks for all the fine new music from this old-music/emerging new-music person.
